I am more the book fan. But I really want to see it. Yeah the book is really good but I really wanna see how Peter Jackson expands on the story. Like I heard he's adding what Gandalf does when he leaves the dwarves and all those extra bits. Yayyy! |

I just picked them up from my time role-playing on LotRO. First I'd look up an entire phrase, then I'd look up each word from the phrase individually so I could try to see how sentences are structured, then I made a few phrases of my own and committed them to memory. Most of what I learned was for naming though. <-- Aewellon Rhovanist: "bird-friend, knowledge of the wild" Was the name of my Rohirim lore-master. OH! Also, there are many sites and guides for learning it. I downloaded "Dragon Flame" which is basically a English-Sindarin dictionary. |

First I'd look up an entire phrase, then I'd look up each word from the phrase individually so I could try to see how sentences are structured, then I made a few phrases of my own and committed them to memory. Tolkien was heavily inspired by Finnish while creating his Elvish languages, so there's that. Also, if you study linguistics in college, you can actually specialize in fictional languages, including Sindarin/Quenya. (Finally, a degree more useless than Philosophy or Sociology.) |

The Elvish spoken in the films for exaple isn't fully correct, since they had to hire a linguist to make it really speakable; inventing new words and stuff. Tolkin never gave a full grammar and didn't even bother to translate some Sindarinparts in the books. You had to go on guessing really. He was the only one who really knew his language and that's sad... It's simply beautiful. |
