Actually, I'd want to see a movie that's like the book. a mystery. Not a romantic movie. Not beauty and the beast or something, but "creepy, dark, ugly cellar dude threatens beautiful girl and her not yet boyfriend" I want a remake of the Lon Chaney film >.< I think telling the story from the mystery side is actually an extremely smart move. I'm tired of the romance aspect constantly changing Erik to what the general public is comfortable with. If they made it more a mystery or a thriller maybe it would be easier to keep Erik's nasally challenged skeletal look. And it would STILL be exciting because the book is pretty exciting by the end. The scene with the Daroga and Raoul in that mirrored room is actually filled with suspense. But the newer movies always either water that down...or never include it.

^^ That is very true. I don't mind going away from the romance either.

My brother said he heard they were considering Tom Cruse for Erik... *barf* Oh GOD NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO. Tom Cruise really creeps me out. And not in a Erik-way either. And he doesn't have the right body type for Erik. He's too short. I have so many problems with this casting choice I can't even...

I don't know why it's soooo hard for people to tell this story right. Even Andrew Lloyd Webber (I do love the musical, don't get me wrong) talking about how the book is a mess and doesn't know what it is...so I will make it a romantic melodrama!
Ok, I like romance. And the Phantom is a great tragic romantic figure. But that's not really the best approach to telling the story. It is a mystery. I don't know why it's so hard for people, directors, writers etc to pin that down.
In a perfect world, I would envision a beautifully shot film (on location?) that uses period correct music as well as a haunting original score, a great deformity and as close to Leroux as you can manage.
(And Richard Armitage as the Phantom)
Raoul is a pretty 21 year old who doesn't know how to be around girls, cries more than he should, but is dying to prove his courage.
Christine is a sweet and innocent blonde who can't give up her angel of music, but fears the phantom and loves Raoul.
Erik is a hot mess who scares the bejesus out of you, makes you laugh and has a beautiful voice and breaks your heart in the end.
The Daroga has to be present with a personality and gives a back story to the phantom rather than serving as the guy who can move the story along: "I know where to go, follow me. Okay, I see you kids have a scene to do so now that I've served the plot point, I'm going to go stand over here now."
Then I'll be happy.

You know the PhantomReviewer? He uploaded a teaser for a review he'll upload in September or so.
