So how would you describe or characterize Christine? I've always thought of Christine as kind of wooden, or just a victim that pushed the story along, never as someone who had a personality. In the musical, she's a little more feisty, in the 2004 movie...eugh, don't get me started. I actually don't remember much about Leroux's novel's Christine (which means I gotta read it again) but I would like to know what other people thought of her.

I didn't like her until I was probably 16 then I started to allow myself to like characters other than Erik, hahaha. But for real, I don't think I thoguht much about her or her plight until then and her character has certainly grown on me over time. I love Sierra...whatever-her-last-name-is performance in the 25th anniversary showing. I thought she brought real life and emotion to her.

I see Christine as very innocent and naive. They don't go into detail about Christine's past, only that she was born in Sweden, her mother died when she was very young, and she was very close to her father.I have a feeling that the only people she really loved and or cared about was her father and Raoul.Presumably, her father was the only teacher she ever knew in her early life so logically she would believe everything he said. And when her father promised that when he was gone, he would send an Angel of Music to her, she really did believe. Why wouldn't she?Why would her beloved father tell her something that wasn't true?So when Erik comes along, she loves and trusts her 'Angel' because her father sent him to her.

Ugh...the first Christine I ever saw was the 2004 movie....and my biggest complaint, other than the fact that Gerik couldn't sing was that I had no love for Emmy Rossum. I thought she played Christine as very very passive with no spine whatsoever and as personable as that dummy the Phantom made that looked just like her (although that could have been her direction from Schumacher...blegh). When I saw the musical, the actress portrayed Christine with a lot more fire in her. Where she yells back at him in the end and stands up for herself. So I liked her a lot better there, since she was easier to relate to. In Kay's novel, I just ended up feeling bad for her because she was still grieving over her father, was questioning her own sanity and always felt unworthy. So now I feel sort of bad for Christine. That's my own evolution of how I feel about Christine...haha
