This applies soully to the ALW musical. So for anyone that has gotten the chance to see it, once or multiple times, was there anyone that you just couldn't stand in their part or that confused you as to why they were playing a particular character?
I have to say, that the time before I saw Tim Martin Gleason and fell in love with his preformence, Jason Mills was playing the Phantom and I couldn't STAND that man. His voice was wrong, but that wasn't the biggest issue, no, no. There were plenty of notes he held back that he could have hit beautifully, and you could tell that he could hit those notes. He belted way too much and he played Erik as animalistic and way to cruel. He also snarled, snorted and growled a lot. It was really, really, weird.
Anyone else?

I'm going to get pelted with tomatoes for saying this, but I cannot STAND Colm Wilkinson as Erik...or as anything, really.
First of all, the beard thing is just weird. I know, I know, "artistic liberties," but I just CAN'T picture Erik with a beard. It's just...no.
There's something about Colm Wilkinson that reminds me of a mix between a New York mobster and Jimmy Durante. He's just...ick as Erik. There isn't anything remotely alluring about him, and I'm not referring to the physical sense. Attractiveness does not necessarily mean a person is good-looking. Colm Wilkinson talk- sings, which is fine for some roles (Henry Higgins, to name one), but Erik is the Phantom of the OPERA. Not the Phantom of "let me sit here and rub you and TALK about it." I get the sense that he's not even trying to emote. He's just sort of lazing about the stage, not taking the performance seriously. "Mmm. Yeah. So...um...yeah, let's...you gonna leave with Raoul, or what?" He reminds me of some sleazy car salesman feeling up one of his customers.
FAIL.

I actually like Colm Wilkinson in the role of Jean Valjean but not as the Phantom. Eugh, the beard, no beard I tell you! Why the beard, why? But as Jean Valjean I thought he was good. I mean there's one part where he sings "Flight" and it always gives me chills. But I understand about the not emoting part. Like in the 10th Anniversary concert of Les Mis, he started out kinda strong but by the end his acting got worse. I was thinking maybe he was getting tired but the laziness makes sense too. All the parts where he's supposed to be getting angry or sharp with whoever, when I saw it the first time, the fact that the character was angry went right over my head.

In fact I first heard Colm as Erik before as Jean Valjean and when a friend introduced me to Les Mis I threw a huge fit over His even being in it. Yeah.... But I do like him as Valjean, works for the character. And...beard???

Uwe Kröger.
Don't know if many of you really know him, since he's a german Musical singer and only performed in Germany and Austria as the Phantom (and Death in Elisabeth and Van Helsing in Dracula etc.). But he's quite famous here.
I really can't stand his voice, because he makes everything sound so arrogant and he has a very... bitchy... voice. I also don't like his additude, that he can't switch off on stage, really.
I did like hin in Sunset Boulevard though... maybe because his character there WAS an ass... no acting required.
He just doesn't ring my Phantom Bell.

I loved him as Jean Valjean, but seeing him in the kind Daddy role sort of ruined it for me as the Phantom. He doesn't sound very...threatening HOLY MUFFINS HE WAS THAT PHANTOM WITH A BEARD? yeah, i totally hadn't made that connection yet.
