I love Cluade Rains. I love him like I love Vincet Price. ...well, almost as much as I love Vincet Price.
Rains was an awesome Invisiable Man. But he was also an awesome Phantom.
The 1947 film version of Phantom is totally different from Leroux's but it still seems to be high on the list of old "horror" flicks from what I've seen. This was actually the first Phantom I ever saw, and I still remember being little and sitting on green carpet having no idea what was happening other than he got acid thrown in his face and his named sounded extremely close to "Rodan" a Godzilla monster from movies my brother and I watched at the same age...
What do think of it?

I love Susanna Foster's singing voice! Other than that, the two "Raouls" are kinda funny at first. I also liked how, at the end of the movie, Christine decides she doesn't want to be with any of her suitors, and would rather sing. Rains has a few good lines here and there, but I guess I'm too much of a Leroux fan-girl to be impressed. I also got a creepy vibe from the whole the Phantom was originally supposed to be Christine's father thing, but then they took it out because THEY thought it was creepy too, but you can still kinda feel its mark. I think I might have preferred it if they left it in, and took out any implications that the Phantom loved her as anything other than a daughter. That could have been more touching.
EDIT: OH! And I also immediately give kudos to any PotO version with a blond Christine, or a Raoul with a mustache.
Unfortunately, I've yet to see a proper noseless skull-faced Erik besides Lon Chaney's attempt, which is still the best to date. With all the technology available now, I find that both impressive on Chaney's part, and sad at the lack of modern industry's ability to give a damn.

Hmm.. off the top of my head, the only blond Christines I can think of, beside Leroux's, is Susanna Foster and Teri Polo in the Dance miniseries.
Mary Philbin, in the Chaney version is brunette, as is Jill Schoelen in the Englund version, and of course all the ALW versions, including the movie, and the cartoon version also has a brunette Christine too. Same with most fan-novels I've read... Oh.. I almost forgot Asia Argento, if that movie counts. I think that covers all the big names. O.o

ALW made her dark haired because of Sarah Brightman. Most fanfictions take the musical for looks. Kay did too, at least for Christine. |

I love how this began as "Let's talk about Claude Rains" and quickly became "Let's talk about Christine's hair."
Personally, I like that they spell his Erik as Erique. It just adds a little touch of FANCY!!

It just adds a little touch of FANCY!! Hahaha! Yeah, this the way of things. At least there's a Christine with hair in the Claude Rains movie! And I like that, too! But at work whenever someone comes in named Eric I always have to ask the spelling and they look at me weird. If they didn't speifcy the C I would always use a K and then their names on our system would be messed up... And yeh. |

Also, he has some of the BEST LINES ever to be included in any version of Phantom.
Example (and forgive me if I get some of this wrong): "Life here is like a resurrection! The music comes down and the darkness distills it, purging it of the pain from which it was made."
