SERIOUSLY. WHAT WAS THAT? I'll always love that movie because it was the first version I ever saw, but now, I'm like, "Um. No. Erik is like Chuck Norris, okay? There is no WAY he would have lost that sword fight." Chuck Norris of the Opera world, I could see that. Like that one joke, "Chuck Norris has a beautiful singing voice, unfortunately the sound of it would melt the average human brain," that could describe Erik! ;D Did anyone catch that one part of the movie, right after Gerik jumps off the crypt, his sword gets stuck in his cape...for some reason, it always makes me laugh. Maybe because Erik would never be that clumsy or...jump off of anything. He would stealthily come up behind whoever it was and dispose of them that way. And Raoul stood there like a boob waiting for him to get untangled. Haha. Oh Gerik.

I know!!! I hated that book... I mean, okay, if you have to have had Erik and Christine get it on, then fine. But let's attempt to stay semi in character?? Erik would NEVER rape anyone. Let alone his beloved Christine. And what's more he wouldn't have touched her unless they were married!! Did someone not read Leroux's (which the author completely discredits, and it isn't as though Leroux created Erik or anything) or not watch the ALW play? What did Erik bring her down there for? To marry her. Ring, dress and all. Thank you.

Well, dudes, I'm an italian girl completely mad for Phantom XD A friend of mine, who knows this passion, gave to me for my birthday Argento's Phantom. At the end I threw up. Best version? Well, the Charles Dance's one of course, but for me the best is the concert for Phantom's 25th anniversary at Royal Albert Hall! I live in Europe, so I have as CD as DVD and....I totally fell in love with!

Is it biased for me to say my own Erik? Kidding! But I have such a hard time deciding which one's the best. Though I have to say, I really loved Charles Dance's version. It made me happy for some reason... I don't know why! Also, Kay's Phantom... So much love! I have to agree with you on this. I've made my own version of Erik using elements of the things I've read, watched, listened to. If I'd have to choose what I consider the best versions though, most definitely the Susan Kay version is my favourite hands down. As for worst... possibly ... Dare I mention it... Dario Argento... Ugh.

If they'd make a movie based on Kay's novel THAT would be awesome. Oh, and let it be made by Tim Burton and Stop-Motion. I'D SO WATCH THAT!!! (Or animated, but PLEASE make Erik ugly for the love of music!)
The worst I've ever seen was the 2004 movie... The Opening was fantastic and THEN it went down real fast. (And the german dub made it even worse. Uwe Kröger can't sing >.<) But your comments make me curious... Need to look up this Arganto-guy...

Speaking of Uwe, I usually find him to be a decent singer. www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9hFnlJIMNY Not the strongest of voices, but not godawful, depending on the style. When I figured out he was in the German dub, I literally shouted, "Oh...NO!" That role is not flattering for his voice. At all. It seems like they just went, "Oh, here's a German guy. Been in stage musicals. Not really classical voice. YOU'RE IN, SIR!" Arrrgh. I like Uwe Kröger, I really do; but with that role, and without the means of holding anything up with his acting, he just sounds strained, shouty, and annoying. He was just the completely wrong person to use for this thing.

Now, I mean no offense to those that enjoyed it, but Colm Wilkinson IS NOT Erik. At least not for me. He's a beautiful Jean Valjean, but not Erik... Yes I know he can sing, and I know he's famous and apparently a lot of people liked him in that role, but for me... There was too much power and all the sweetness seemed lost and misplaced...

I love love love Colm as Jean Valjean though. He's the only one who can sing "Flight" like he does. I think he has an amazing quality to his voice but true, it's not how I always imagined the Phantom to sound. It was a little too gravel-y.

He's like a male Carlotta to me, honestly. I had the bad luck of seeing him as Der Tod in Elisabeth and, well... One night he'd be all over Rudolf, almost raping him on stage and the other night, he'd not even touch him if he could help it, because Rudolf wasn't played by his lover but someone he doesn't get along with. Unprofessionality at its best.

If you want to watch some more versions of PotO or general "phantomy" movies, here's a link to Phantom Reviewer's forum post, listing some free streaming links: phantomreviews.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=movies&action=display&thread=263And if you want more information on Phantom films, or a hilariously snarky break-down/review of them, even *very* obscure ones, check out PR's youtube channel: www.youtube.com/user/PhantomReviews (I suggest watching them in order, staring from the review of the 2004 movie) Now, my favorite movie is definitely the Lon Chaney version. He just does an amazing job as Erik. I love all his subtle movements, and the "attitude" he can exude without even speaking. My only wish is that they wouldn't have cut out the Perros Graveyard scene or replaced the original ending where Erik dies of a broken heart rather than an angry mob. I recently downloaded the BBC Big Finish productions radio dramatization of the book too, and I loved it! They need to make a movie based off that script. OH! And that fan-made movie Erik: Portrait of a Living Corpse looks promising. I haven't seen it yet, but the second I get a chance to, I will. Least favorite phantom adaptation... hmm... I'm thinking the Phantom of Manhattan book. At least the Dario Argento version is SO BAD it's funny. You just need a humorous friend to watch it with you and you've got your own personal Mystery Science Theatre. But this book.... UGH! Erik *rapes* Christine and worships a demon of greed? Right... Ooh, good to hear that the BBC version is good. I'm looking to download it. And I'd love to see Portrait of a Living Corpse! They had a fairly low budget and it still looks great! You are totally right. At least we can laugh about the whole rats-in-pants debacle. Especially the Phantom Reviewer's videos. That guy is so hilarious, my stomach hurts whenever I watch his stuff from laughing so hard. I think the worst thing I could say about the BBC radio show was that Christine and the Persian seemed to like/tolerate Erik slightly less than they do in the novel. I realize many of Christine's reactions can be interpreted differently, but I always at least got the idea that she had some form of mild Stockholm syndrome going on, and they cut out a bit of the dialog that would have supported that kind of attachment. And the Persian just seems to straight despise Erik. BEST part of it is the ending scene when Erik talks to the Persian. Well done indeed! Also, the guy who does Erik's voice, imo, does a fantastic job! He can sound both soft and beautiful and charming, but also very creepy or angry. Yes... PR's videos. They can even make Phantom of the Megaplex hilarious enough to tolerate. Or even... *gag* Angel of Music!!

Oh man, I finally looked up the Phantom Reviewer and his review of the Dario Argento version and now understand why it is the WORST MOVIE IN EXISTENCE. WHAT WAS THAT? And that was his DAUGHTER? And Julian Sands cannot ACT. And why didn't the Phantom have a deformity? And why the rats? Why?

If you guys think the Dario Argento version is bad, you haven't seen nothing. As I pointed out before, at least that one is bad in a way that it's kinda funny (like the scene with Raoul and Philippe in the bath house). If you really want bad, watch PR's review on Angel of Music. The only way that could be turned into something funny is by making a completely new movie as a parody.
