So there is already a great deal of discussion going on about the great and not-so-great ALW Phantoms out there, so what about Christine?
I have a few favourites, in no particular order:
1. Sarah Brightman, because she was the original Christine, and ALW wrote the role of Christine specifically for her. Her acting's not that great, so I've heard, but she totally makes up for that with her splendid voice. No one can sing quite like her!
2. Gina Beck. I have only seen a few clips of her on YouTube, but from what I've seen of her she is a perfect blend of great singing and great acting.
3. Sierra Boggess. She would have to be, in my opinion, one of the best Christines out there as far as her acting goes. She just throws so much emotion into the role, and you can tell that while she is absolutely terrified of Erik, there is still a bit of strength about her, though she may not know it. Her singing isn't as strong as others, but then again, I read somewhere that she only relatively recently started singing opera, so she does a very good job there.
3. Rachel Barrell. Again , I've only seen a few clips of her, but she really does put a great deal of emotion into the character. I once saw a clip of the Final Lair scene with JOJ, and during that whole scene where she gives back the ring to Erik, and he tells her that he loves her, you can tell that she doesn't want to leave him, and that she greatly pities and admires him, despite her love for Raoul.
4. Emmy Rossum. Now, I will say that despite her not-so-brilliant singing skills, and her never-changing, doe-eyed expression, she is still pretty good. She definitely conveys that essential childlike innocence that is part of Christine's character, and during the MOTN and Wandering Child scenes of the film, you can tell that she is really attracted to and entranced by Erik's voice (never mind that Gerard Butler's singing is... well, less-than-good, just go along with me here!).
So... tell me what you think!
