I wouldn't want him to have any other name. BUT I don't think that he knew it means "exclusive ruler" when he picked it. Actually, (and pardon the etymological nerdiness) I believe it's Eric (with a "c") that means "exclusive ruler," whereas Erik (with a "k") means "forever alone." I think this makes a bit more sense, yes? Actually, the different writing doesn't change the names meaning. One can write Erik in many ways: Erik, Eric, Erick, Erich (german version of the name) even Eirik, Erico, Aric, Arik, Airikr and (believe it or not) Jerker. Those all are versions of the same name and all mean "exclusive ruler". There are tons of versions of my name too and all mean "the pure" (Haha, very funny, mom >.<)

*sarcasm* Hmm.. I'm pretty sure it means "forever alone". XD
"Exclusive ruler" isn't bad though. He is the master of his domain down in the cellars.

Well, the priest didn't seem too happy, when she told him to give the baby HIS name. Like "Ugh, everytime someone calls my name I'm going to be reminded of the boney corpsechild forever..."

Direct quote from the Leroux book:
"Your hands! Your hands! Give me your hands!' And he seized my hands and dug them into his awful face. He tore his flesh with my nails, tore his terrible dead flesh with my nails!...`Know,' he shouted, while his throat throbbed and panted like a furnace, `know that I am built up of death from head to foot and that it is a corpse that loves you..."
Is Erik.. rotting? Discuss.

Is Erik.. rotting? Discuss. First of all...blegh. Second of all, hmm that's an interesting question. I never thought of him as rotting. I thought of him as describing himself as corpse-like to be more of how he appears but less of how he IS physically. I thought Christine was saying "terrible dead flesh" more of how he looked rather than how it was and hyperbolizing (that's not a word...)...because he has to be a real person right? I mean he's not a zombie... It could be part of his deformity but has there been any known medical cases where rotting flesh is not life-threatening? Because I'm guessing he would be rotting since he was born if he was rotting. I don't know because I was never a medical person but I always thought rotting was very very bad...and meant death...soon...

Maybe it's something that developed from living in a moist, dark environment for so long. Also, his hands are described twice in the book as "smelling of death" which I assume also means he's rotting, and smells like it to boot. Anyone willing to write a romance fanfiction with this depiction of Erik? XD
