Yeah, he doesn't have a nose originally. It's his most distinguishing feature and the reason his face looks like a decaying skull. XD

Born with Marfan's syndrome and contracted leprosy at a very young age, perhaps? Perhaps the Kay Phantom, but I seriously doubt the Leroux Phantom had Marfan's. He's never said to be unusually tall there, his hands are thin and bony but not described as long, and he doesn't seem to have any of the other weaknesses that come with it. But.. holy crap. I'm kinda glad you mentioned it because that actually explains a few things for me. I'm gonna talk to my doctor about this. Lmao! (Seriously, thanks!) Well, this is a strange turn of events. You're welcome!

I just wasn't sure of myself. Speaking of no noses, have you ever heard of anyone born without a nose? I'm just curious to see if there has ever been anyone born without one...

One thing I've found that can cause that is facial clefts. It's like when you have a cleft lip or cleft palate but it goes up the middle of your entire head, seemingly removing your nose. It's pretty rare for it to be that precise though, and it usually would deform your mouth as well.

Well in Kay's novel he has deformed lips! SO maybe he was born with a cleft palate!

I don't really think Kay considered that much medically speaking, plus it would be ridiculously rare for him to have both Marfan's and a facial cleft. It's just that Erik in the ALW version had weird lips. In the Leroux book he has very thin lips, hardly there at all, adding to his deathly appearance.

I do know she wrote something about his deformed lips...so he does have deformed lips. But as for the cleft palate..yeah she never specified him medically. It's rare for him to be a prodigy at 6 months...but he did it hahaha maybe along with having a rare gift he also had a rare disease(s)? Haha. Ohh that's right. In Leroux's book he does have really thin lips.

But if we're going into the realm of complete fantasy and impossibility, then there's no real point in saying Kay intentionally gave him something real and medical. It seem like he's just more of an amalgamation of Leroux's Phantom and ALW's Phantom in Kay's book. Also, having 1 rare thing doesn't make you more likely to have more rare things, it makes it much less likely, statistically speaking. Like, if you get hit by lightning, you don't have increased odds of winning the lottery. Actually, your odds of winning the lottery are still the same as anyone who hasn't been hit by lightning, but it IS far less likely to find someone who has won the lottery AND been struck by lightning. Ok.. I'm rambling now.

Oh dude I own that edition!! I traded my 7th grade English teacher two ice-cream coupons for it. XD ALSO: Marfan's does mess with the bones, but it's a connective tissue disorder, so it also screws with your skin and joints.
