First of all...blegh. Second of all, hmm that's an interesting question. I never thought of him as rotting. I thought of him as describing himself as corpse-like to be more of how he appears but less of how he IS physically. I thought Christine was saying "terrible dead flesh" more of how he looked rather than how it was and hyperbolizing (that's not a word...)...because he has to be a real person right? I mean he's not a zombie... It could be part of his deformity but has there been any known medical cases where rotting flesh is not life-threatening? Because I'm guessing he would be rotting since he was born if he was rotting. I don't know because I was never a medical person but I always thought rotting was very very bad...and meant death...soon... Maybe it's something that developed from living in a moist, dark environment for so long. Also, his hands are described twice in the book as "smelling of death" which I assume also means he's rotting, and smells like it to boot. Anyone willing to write a romance fanfiction with this depiction of Erik? XD Do you people know how death smells? I know. It's not very pleasant but it has nothing to do with rotting. rotting meat or flesh smells reather sweet, and someone or something thats going to die soon smells like... like... I can't really describe it. I reather think she meant "dead flesh" more like fitting to the term "dead face". Leroux was very... um... leteral about his description I think. I mean, there is this one part, where Erik is suddenly sitting at the same table as the managers and some others and, well, Leroux says that he was "boney" and like a skelleton. (I can only rely on my german copy here...) So Erik would come across as a walking mummy to me, I think. And he lives in the sewers. Don't think that adds to his phantomy smell. Anyway, I find it hillarious, that Erik attends a banquet and everyone gets excited and wants to offer him a drink and later he sitts at the diningtable and informs his new managers of Buquets death himself.

I'd so love to know Eriks point of view: "So, I was sitting there waiting for the guests to notice me. And as they did, I could enjoy their faces turn white and the chatter to stop."

Wow, he went out there? And did that? And geez...he must really be confident that he's not gonna get caught... And that line you wrote..."dead body...which isn't mine, that is." sounds just like him! Haha

XD Hmm maybe...I mean I heard that the french word that "smells" is translated from could also be "Feels" but I just saw that somewhere on the internet and don't have a source to cite it from. Also...I can't read/speak/understand French so I'm relying on second hand information. I mean "feels" could make a little more sense...considering he looks like death...and his hands are bony so he might "feel" like death or the grim reaper or something... Hahaha...I would like to see that fanfiction with a Mary-Sue, "Oh Erik, your face does not frighten me and neither does...your...rotting...flesh....--runs off screaming--"

............leprosy? It distorts the face, and parts fall off, and you can't feel anything, and basically, you rot. But it's not a birth defect. So...?

That's exactly what I thought back in middle school. The first time I read PotO I did research project on possible causes of Erik's described condition and my most-likely choice was leprosy. There are even some medicinal treatments for it that have a possible side effect of liver damage, causing jaundice skin. Leprosy can also effect your eyes, leading to eventual blindness, but if you've ever seen a blind animal's eyes in the dark, they tend to be more reflective of light for some reason. Not to say Erik is blind, but that he may have been on the way to it, making his eyes more reflective (and possibly not really yellow). OH! Also hair loss. The only issue is that it's contracted and not a genetic/birth defect. So.. maybe he got it when he was very young and has been taking medicine his whole life, thereby damaging his kidneys? I'm not sure when the medicine was developed though, I'll have to look that up again.

Perhaps the Kay Phantom, but I seriously doubt the Leroux Phantom had Marfan's. He's never said to be unusually tall there, his hands are thin and bony but not described as long, and he doesn't seem to have any of the other weaknesses that come with it. But.. holy crap. I'm kinda glad you mentioned it because that actually explains a few things for me. I'm gonna talk to my doctor about this. Lmao! (Seriously, thanks!)

I'm kinda glad you mentioned it because that actually explains a few things for me. I'm gonna talk to my doctor about this. Lmao! (Seriously, thanks!) Yeah but still, leprosy leads to shortened life span right?...no one can live with rotting flesh that long. I wonder what the lifespan is...of the average leper. Also, in Kay's novel, there is a point made that he was born without a nose, so that part couldn't fall off due to leprosy. It's actually extremely difficult to catch leprosy because supposedly 95% of the population is immune and the other 5% can catch different kinds, but they all are infected mostly by other humans (unless he snuggled with an armadillo or a monkey sometime in his life...). So unless he had contact with another leper and his genes are susceptible to leprosy I don't think he could contract it. It also comes with muscle weakness and numbness which Kay's Phantom didn't have considering he killed a lot of people in Persia rather than being killed himself. Parts fall of lepers not because it is a symptom of the disease but because the different areas of the body that have become numb can be cut without any feeling and then infected and then the infection can spread to the point where the flesh rots and dies as well as the bones becoming damaged. You could have leprosy without the skin lesions since it attacks the nervous system so I suppose he could have contracted it without his mother knowing but they think that susceptibility is partly genetic so she most likely would have contracted it as well. Marfan's Syndrome though, he could have, considering you are born with it rather than contract it.

Marfans's would only explain his long bones, which is only a feature in Kay's book, which I don't consider canon. It still doesn't explain his nose. I don't think Kay would have intended to give him any specific condition either. A lot of what she says about not having a nose is not medically accurate. Erik would still be able to smell and taste and have mucus without the exterior skin and cartilage. All those functions are part of the deep nose and throat.
On a related subject, he'd also be perfectly capable of singing. Resonating your voice mainly involves the nose/face sinuses, which would be fully intact for Erik. If anything, I think the lack of extra cartilage and skin might give him an even clearer voice, especially if he was born that way and never had to "relearn" how to speak right.

Does he not have a nose in Leroux's book? I can't remember. Yeah..I've never heard of someone being born without a nose but I'm sure that it has happened...? And yeah, I think he just doesn't like to eat...I never really connected it with his nose. I have a friend who has a nose but can't discern differences in taste really so she doesn't really LIKE to eat, she just eats because she has to. So he might have that instead. The sound might actually resonate better in his head without a nose. It might be more clear and less nasally...? Haha
