This lady has to be one of my favorite characters (besides Erik of course). Which version of Carlotta to you like the most? What do you think of her? Would anyone like to imagine a tragic backstory for her? Do you sing like La Carlotta? feel free to be random on this thread, because the cellars are getting full!

Ahaha...I think ALW's Carlotta is hilarious. I think that her parts in the ALW musical are actually extremely difficult to sing and to get cast as her means that her voice has to have some high range...
I have to admit though...sometimes...when I'm feeling extremely silly...I sing like La Carlotta. Especially "Think of Me".

From the perspective of faithfulness of Lerouxs novel, I'd say I like the "Claude Rains" Carlotta most. (I know she's not called Carlotta here, but what's in a name.)
She can actually sing good, but not as good as Christine, is bitchy and bossy and all that. That's what bothers me in ALW version most: If I was manager to that Opera house and I'd hear Christine sing... I'd ditch Carlotta at once, never considering her in a singing role EVER again.

My brother sings like La Carlotta. I think the two of them would get along surprisingly well, considering. And i actually love the Argento Carlotta. She's one of the only true characters in that deep dark pit of a movie.

I mean if you're comparing singing talent then in ALW's musical, I never thought Carlotta's singing was bad, just overly dramatic and exaggerated. It was more her personality that was pretty horrible. Too much of a diva and too demanding. Because for me Carlotta's singing in ALW's musical is more operatic than Christine's singing. And her range has to go really high. I mean I understand the managers for keeping her around since her "style" of singing is more the "operatic way" than Christine's who has more a musical theater style which is how ALW wrote the music since it is a Broadway/West End show. But comparing the passion in their singing, Christine trumps her there. Carlotta was always singing to draw more attention to herself, Christine sang because she loved it.

I love ALW's Carlotta. She is most likely my favourite. Poor thing has no idea what's going on and all she wants is to be the only diva... "She's backing out!!"

Personally, I really love the Carlotta in the David Staller musical version. She's actually kind of portrayed as a sympathetic character, at least in the song "An Able Woman." She is also notable for being the only Carlotta I've seen that keeps singing through the entire croak incident. Most Carlottas will stop at SOME point, but this lady just keeps on singing! She bursts into tears afterwards, but hey, she made it through the song!

I have to admit, I know the german version best (apart from my 2 CD recording with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman). And there, it's more like screaming than singing. And sometimes the actress was hitting the wrong tones on purpose. Also, in the 2004 movie... I find her accent terrible in her singing. A good singer (for me) has no accent when singing. Like Mirusia Louwerse, when she sings "In mir klingt ein Lied" you can't hear she's from australia at all. But that's just my oppinion.

I think Minnie Driver in the 2004 was actually the only singing-dubbed actor/actress. I don't know who decided that, but I can think of a couple others who cold have used dubbing or even just recasting.

I always thought she's even been singing "Child of the wilderness" in the credits O.o That's the only song she did sing for real. All the other songs she was dubbed. She did all her own speaking though. For the German version: Ohh I see. I didn't know that. I've only heard the Broadway Cast and there she's a bit shrill but she doesn't hit the wrong notes. Haha. As for the accent thing: A lot of great opera singers have accents when they sing in English. Natalie Dessay and Diana Damrau have their respective accents when they sing but only when they sing in English. I mean I suppose singing in English isn't their priority since most operas are in Italian or French or German. I think it's more important for them to not have an accent when it's Italian or German or French but not having an accent singing English is difficult.
