Thoughts on Raoul? How would you characterize him? There have been several different portrayals of him, even in the ALW musical, from a pompous but earnest Vicomte to an angry and pompous Vicomte. So how do you see him?
I always thought of him as someone who did genuinely love Christine, even if he didn't have the "burning" passion as the Phantom, he was stable which was what she needed, I thought. I mean I'm not a shipper of anything but that's just my two cents.

I never thought much about Raoul. To me, he always is the guy "who gets in the way". Even in the Leroux novel I was constantly wishing for him to stop pestering Christine and leave her alone, she told him often enough.
BUT I think he actually is nice and caring. And he can be sweet and inncoent and... *Erik enters the stage*... a constant bother, please take him away >.<
I compare him to Erik and Raoul looses... everytime.

I never thought much about Raoul. To me, he always is the guy "who gets in the way". Even in the Leroux novel I was constantly wishing for him to stop pestering Christine and leave her alone, she told him often enough. BUT I think he actually is nice and caring. Well, about the book, I see Raoul as a wandered brat wandering around the opera house XD Perhaps some dancers thought of him as a maniac, ready to rape them every moment...A nightmare worse than the Opera Ghost! About the musical...he just wants to guard and guide Christine, to get Christine far away from Erik...but sometimes I think he sees Erik not as a danger for Christine, but as a contender in love... |

In the book he really was like telling Christine that she loved Erik, that she enjoyed being afraid of him. And that he was jealous because of that. I so wish that she would have said YES at that moment. I don't like Raoul... but that's because I love Erik. I don't think that really liking both would be possible... |

Haha, I agree with your thoughts about his more redeeming qualities but I totally understand about how he loses every time. I compare him to Erik and it's like...uh why in the world would you pick this other dude? I think he was the safe choice. But why in the world would you want to be "safe"?  |

I actually really like Raoul. Leroux was more about him than anything else and tried to illustrate him as a suitable suitor above anything else. He’s such a sweetheart. I really feel for him - being raised by his aunts and older brother who spoils him to no end, he ends up being rather a Nancy. He cries a lot, especially when he sees Christine, thus giving Phillipe a reason to be ashamed of him.Also, he's he’s a sailor lad. I have a soft spot for them. However, he’s not just a girly girl boy. I think he’s rather lustful, hasty and impulsive - he says things without thinking, insulting Christine numerous times (and she stands up to him in some). At the end of the day, though, he really cares, and though often puzzled and sometimes angered by Christine’s allegiance to Erik, he tries to understand. I don't know... He's not a useless hero, but he's not the typical romantic hero in my eyes. I think it's a nice change that the girl "saves" the guy.
